It is Fall! Well, although Autumn is not quite officially here until the end of September, in many ways this season is already upon us. The start of a new school year, Fall sports, changes in weather, and yes, even those pesky allergies make this a time packed full with challenges and excitement. Soooooo, here we go!

Allergies:

Let’s get this topic over with right away. Does your child seem to develop a cold that lasts for weeks this time of year? If it is associated with a lot of sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, and puffy itchy eyes, you may be dealing with allergies. In addition to outside environmental allergens, this time of year brings more inside time at school and home, with exposure to such allergens as mold and dust mites. Most of the time, these annoying symptoms can be controlled with some simple changes. Replace those dust filters, wipe down blinds and floors, wash those stuffed furry friends, and use mattress/pillow covers. Keeping the windows closed to keep the Ragweed outside where it belongs is a good idea. There are many otc and prescription antihistamines, eye drops and nasal sprays which can bring relief to allergy sufferers, but it is important that parents work closely with their child’s pediatrician to determine the best course of action.

Sports:

There’s not an activity that is much more fun than participating in or cheering for student sports. We at PHC encourage activity and athletics at all ages. But we also want to work with parents and athletes to make this season, and all of the seasons to come, as successful and safe as possible. Whether we are talking about cheerleading, running, football, volleyball, golf, soccer, rugby or any other sport, injury prevention should be at the top of your game card. Make sure all protective clothing is worn and fits properly. Have your athlete eat a well-balanced diet and stay hydrated on practice and game days. If the athletic activity lasts for less than 2 hours, water is the hydration fluid of choice. If the event lasts more than 2 hours, an electrolyte solution may be added. Many sports injuries are due to overuse injuries or stresses to muscles and joints. Keep track of pitches thrown, miles run, and make sure that the athlete is using proper technique. We are all aware of the dangers of head injuries in athletes. Parents, if you suspect that your child has had any sports-related head injury, please have them properly evaluated before they resume play. Young athletes live in the present, and are often willing to brush off an injury, or “play through the pain”, but any sports injury deserves a call or visit to the pediatrician .

Back to School:

Share the excitement! Whether parents are sending their child off to preschool or college there are ways to help your child have a smooth, successful transition.

  • Start those “school rules”. Children (yes, even the big kids!) need 9-12 hours of sleep at night. Limit “screen time “ to 10 hours per week. That might be a couple of hours on a weekend evening, with no more than 1 hour on school nights.
  • Plan for the week. Have the house stocked with healthy snacks, and enlist your child’s help in planning for school lunches. Remember to pack a water bottle each day. No sticky, messy juice boxes!
  • Prepare to study. Have a well-lit, quiet space available for homework and test preparation.
  • Knowledge is everything! Know your child’s teacher (s), their schedules, and subject matter. Staying involved and interested encourages your child to share news of the day.

Enjoy this Fall!
